Spotlight on Nikki Swift Designs

With a cup of tea in hand I sat down to complete my first interview in a months worth of Spotlights for my now INTERNATIONAL (eek!) blog!

Nikki, I learnt, is a 30 year old designer who specialises in wedding stationary. At University, she studied Fashion and Textiles design but tends to err towards paper rather than fabrics these days. Her work is very vivid and powerful incorporating the patterns and prints that you would generally see on fabrics like polka dots, stripes and florals which is where she finds her inspiration.

Unlike most designers she actually started designing her first stationary collection before she got engaged herself and had a steady stream of customers prior to her own big day. In fact she was so busy with her work that she actually forgot she was due to be making her own wedding invitations and had already began working on stationary for brides who’s weddings were later in the year than her own. Luckily she had her mom on hand to remind her! Nikki was married in 2013 and designed all of her wedding stationary including a guestbook made up of individually printed postcards designed by herself. She also made DIY centrepieces with hanging table numbers as well as her menus. Her day had a red and white theme to it and there was a month long heat wave prior to the wedding which ended just before hand so the wedding party had to pose with umbrellas to get photos.

Nikki wore a beautiful Jenny Packham dress which was her biggest extravagance nut she made up for it by finding her bridesmaids dresses in Forever 21 on sale for £18! Surprisingly though her own wedding stationary was not her favourite which changes all of the time as she hones her skills. At present she loving a Christmassy snowflake stationary pack for a December wedding and a very glitzy and glamourous gold glitter selection. She’s also working on a night sky themed set which she really likes. My favourite however is a very rustic piece on brown card covered in leaves and wrapped in ribbon. It’s like autumn in a snapshot and I’m pretty sure I’m in love!!!

Her favourite thing about designing wedding stationary is that every day is different. She loves the fact that she is involved in the best part of a couples lives together. She gets to meet so many amazing people and capture their ideas to turn it into a reality for that special day. The whole process is incredibly fun. The hardest part about her job is that she feels that sometimes the work that designers put into creating their pieces isn’t appreciated. Sometimes she finds it upsetting that people complain openly about pricing and can’t see the effort the designers put in but she tends not to dwell on it as she has customers that understand the value of her work and isn’t that what counts?

Before the birth of her son, Nikki worked around 10 hours every day and would even put in overtime if she had a large workload but outsourcing her printing and working on printed designs has meant she can now spend more time with her son; working full time 2 days a week whilst her parents watch her son and slotting in work whilst he naps or when he’s gone to bed.

You can view Nikki’s work on her website – http://www.nikkiswift.com/ and see her updates by following her on Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/nikkiswiftcom/?pnref=lhc

Her prices range from £1 for a mini A7 invitation or save the date to £4 for an invitation bundle which is her most popular package. Nikki caters for every budget and has a set range to choose from as well as providing a bespoke service which is most opted for.
